Canada’s Start-up Visa Program targets immigrant entrepreneurs with the skills and potential to build businesses in Canada that:

• Are innovative
• Can create jobs for Canadians
• Can compete on a global scale

Do you have an innovative business idea? If you can get support for your idea from one of the designated organizations, you may be able to immigrate to Canada.

The Province of Quebec is in charge of its own business immigration program.

Fees start from $2,140. Processing time is 12 to 16 months. You may need to give biometrics with your application. This processing time includes the time you need to give your biometrics.

In order to be eligible for the Start-Up Visa Program, applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

• Have a qualifying business that meets the ownership requirements;
• Get a letter of support from a designated organization in the form of the Commitment Certificate, that should be submitted by the organization directly to IRCC;
• Meet minimum language requirements in English or French (Canadian Language Benchmark 5 in all abilities);
• Bring enough money to settle in Canada;
• Plan to settle in a province other than the Province of Quebec;
• Pass Canadian security and medical clearness.

Once the application is submitted, it is processed and assessed to ensure all requirements are met. If the application is approved, applicants receive a permanent visa. This includes the Confirmation of Permanent Residence and the entry visa.

Designated Organizations

IRCC has designated a number of organizations authorized to participate in the Start-Up Visa Program. A list of these organizations is published on government website. Designated organizations are business groups that are approved to invest in or support possible start-ups through the Start-up Visa Program.

• Venture capital funds (the investment must be at least $200,000 Canadian dollars)
• Angel investor groups (the investments must be at least $75,000 Canadian dollars)
• Business incubators (no investment needed, but the applicants must be accepted into an incubator program)

 

In order to participate in the Start-up Visa Program, your business idea or venture needs to receive endorsement from one or more designated organizations. These organizations have the authority to select which business proposals they will evaluate and each has its own unique process for reviewing and assessing the proposals. This may involve presenting your business concept in person or submitting a comprehensive business plan.

If an organization decides to consider your business idea, it will assess its potential for success. If the organization chooses to support your idea, it will provide you with a Letter of Support, indicating their endorsement of your venture.
