Express Entry System
Express Entry is not an immigration program itself, but rather an online system designed to manage Canada's skilled worker immigration application intakes. It offers a clear pathway to permanent residency for eligible prospective candidates who can register a profile, provided they meet the program requirements. This profile remains valid for 12 months and gives candidates the chance to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) from either the Canadian Federal Government or an interested Canadian province. Once an ITA is received, candidates can submit an electronic application for permanent residence to be processed.
To summarize, Express Entry is a tool used to manage immigration applications from skilled workers and is not an immigration program on its own. There are three immigration programs that are managed through Express Entry:
Canadian Experience Class
For skilled workers who have Canadian work experience. Work experience must have been gained in the 3 years before you apply
Federal Skilled Worker Program
For skilled workers with foreign work experience and must meet criteria for education and other factors
Federal Skilled Trades Program
For skilled workers who are qualified in a skilled trade and must have a valid job offer or a certificate of qualification
Get Extra Points
If you’re eligible for one of the above programs, you can also apply through Express Entry for the Provincial Nominee Program. If you’re nominated, you’ll get extra points (600) so you can be invited to apply quickly.
Application Process
Although the Express Entry system itself may seem straightforward, it is crucial to take the application process seriously to avoid potential refusals, misrepresentations, and CRS score recalculations. Before considering this pathway for our clients, there are several steps we must take:
- Determine if the applicant meets the eligibility requirements for any of the programs mentioned above.
- Gather all necessary documents to ensure that the information used to determine the CRS score can be verified. Failure to do so may result in the rejection of the applicant's electronic PR application.
- Create and submit the applicant's Express Entry profile while ensuring that the appropriate CRS score is allocated. Once submitted, profiles remain valid for one year.
- Wait for an Invitation to Apply, which is issued monthly by IRCC based on the CRS cut-off score. Once received, applicants have 60 days to submit their PR application along with all required documents.
- Collect evidence, documentation, and verification of the applicant's eligibility to demonstrate the appropriate allocation of the CRS score for the electronic PR application.
